The dryer broke last night while I was doing laundry, and I was loathe to contact the landlords about it[1][2]. Fortunately, the cohuman and my housemates have the same attitude, so we decided to at least try fixing it ourselves.

We all looked up the error code, and found the same thing: the official recommendation was to pay like 400 dollars to get arepair person to replace the logic board or whatever. The unofficial recommendation was to pop open the dryer and look at the board and observe that this specific solder joint has exploded and redo it yourself.

So when the cohuman got home, they + my housemate[3] went about retrieving the board from the dryer while I made dinner[4]. After eating, cohuman hid for an hour to clean and resolder the board.

A circuit board. There is a black smudge on the right side. Close-up of a circuit board. A solder joint has failed and exploded. Close-up of a circuit board, showing repairs.

It worked! Nothing exploded again!

... I guess I should maybe be concerned that there's a reason that it always fails that way. Like, maybe this is the equivalent of the plastic gears in a stand mixer that fail first, because they're easy to replace and the rest of the machinery is hard to replace. Or it might've just been that they figured that this piece, at this durability, will probably fail after about 10 years of use, so there's no need to reinforce it during manufacture.

It probably won't catch on fire!

[1]: and remind them of our existence (please don't raise our rent)
[2]: I fully expect that if they were the ones dealing with it, it would take 3 weeks, min, for it to get fixed: call their handydude, have him come out and not be able to fix it, call a real repairperson, have them come out and determine the board needs replacing, order that, order it, replace it.
[3]: they have many relevant abilities, but truthfully, their relevant ability here was Being 6'3".
[4]: and set off the fire alarm, twice[5]
[5]: it's how i know the broccoli is ready
